RaGe Art Rumble 2025 Round 2 Poster
For Auckland University Esports Club
The work I'm most satisfied with usually came out of some kind of constraint. Whether it be working on a run-down laptop or a difficult design specification, figuring out how to circumvent such obstacles demands that you really pour yourself into the project instead of defaulting to the path of least resistance. A good example of this that comes to mind would be the posters for Rage Art Rumble - a fighting game event we organized at the University of Auckland under the Tekken World Tour (TWT) series of tournaments. In order to be branded as a TWT event, promotional materials have to conform to a strict set of guidelines issued by Bandai Namco. These guidelines happen to also restrict the game assets usable down to the stock character art (which had to be front and center with little to no cropping) and a few other splash arts, which in turn imposes a substantial roadblock for our design workflow. The primary inspiration for this particular poster was the cover of the December 2000 issue of PS2 Magazine, featuring Bryan Fury behind a rectangular grid. The cobalt blue paired with yellow accents alongside the barrage of assorted typography immediately made a strong impression in my mind, and I wanted to adapt as much of that feeling as possible onto my design in the hopes of our members feeling the same about Rage Art Rumble. Due to the character art having to be in the foreground, I decided to collaged one of our posters from a previous year with some of my vacation photos in the bottom half for a bit a laugh. With that said, playing around with the hue and noise gave it a grungy look reminiscent to the low-resolution LCD displays that Tekken would’ve been played on in the early 2000s. I also added some glitched streaks to give the poster a sense of motion in addition to providing contrast to the otherwise one-note colour palette.
